Handheld metal detectors are widely used security screening equipment at airports, subway stations, schools, stadiums and government buildings. Security staff use these portable devices to quickly scan people and detect hidden metal objects. But how does a handheld metal detector work exactly?

Core Working Principle

Most handheld metal detectors rely on electromagnetic induction. The device contains a coil inside. When powered on, the coil generates a high-frequency alternating electromagnetic field.

When this magnetic field approaches any metal object, eddy currents will be induced inside the metal. These eddy currents create their own reverse magnetic field. The detector’s internal sensor picks up this feedback magnetic signal. Once the signal exceeds the preset threshold, the detector triggers an audio alarm, vibration or light alert to notify operators that metal has been found.

Handheld metal detectors can identify ferrous and non-ferrous metals, though sensitivity varies by model. High-sensitivity units can detect tiny metal fragments, while standard models are tuned for weapons and large metal items.
