Working Mechanism of Supermarket Swing Turnstile
Source:Sintronictech   Author:International Department

A supermarket swing turnstile (retail‑dedicated swing barrier gate) is a special‑purpose automatic pedestrian barrier optimized for hypermarkets, supermarkets and unmanned retail stores within a complete turnstile gate system. Different from standard office‑oriented swing turnstiles, it features extra‑wide configurable lanes to accommodate shopping trolleys, strollers and large‑bags shoppers. Equipped with radar or infrared auto‑induction sensors plus multi‑zone infrared safety beams, it can realize contact‑free automatic opening, anti‑tailgating and reverse‑intrusion audio‑visual alarm. It supports multiple credential verification modes including QR‑code, NFC membership card and facial recognition for membership‑only retail scenarios.

Core Working Principle of Supermarket Swing Turnstile

Sintronic supermarket swing turnstile supports two major working modes: automatic sensor‑triggered free‑pass mode (common for public supermarkets) and credential‑verification controlled mode (for membership‑only / unmanned retail). Full‑cycle operation steps are shown below.

Mode 1: Radar‑infrared auto‑induction free‑pass (standard supermarket entrance)

  1. Standby locked status: Swing panels stay closed. Radar and infrared sensors keep active monitoring the approach zone and passage lane. LED shows red standby status.

  2. Pedestrian approach triggers induction: When shoppers with shopping trolleys walk close to the turnstile, radar sensor detects approaching movement. The control board sends signal to brushless motor, swing panels rotate outward 90 degrees to open the lane, LED turns green.

  3. Lane‑passage monitoring: Multi‑beam infrared sensors continuously monitor pedestrian/trolley moving through the lane. Anti‑pinch logic will stop or reverse swing panels if obstacles are detected inside the passage.

  4. Auto‑close & reset: After shoppers and trolleys fully clear all infrared beams, with preset delay time for trolley passing, motor drives swing panels swing back to closed‑lock position, turnstile returns to standby for next visitor.

  5. Anti‑tailgating & reverse‑intrusion alarm: If a second person tries to tailgate, or someone attempts to enter from exit direction, infrared sensors capture abnormal movement and trigger audio‑visual alarm while keeping barriers locked.

Mode 2: Credential‑verification controlled mode (membership‑only / unmanned retail store)

  1. Standby locked status: Swing panels keep closed, sensors are in monitoring state.

  2. Membership credential input: Shoppers present valid QR‑code, NFC membership card or face to external reader device. After identity validation passes, reader sends Wiegand / dry‑contact open signal to main‑control board.

  3. Motor‑driven swing panels open: Swing barriers rotate outward by 90°, LED switches green for customer passage.

  4. Passage monitoring and auto reset: Infrared sensors supervise passing process with anti‑pinch protection. After full lane clearance, barriers swing back to locked standby status. Illegal tailgating or reverse movement will trigger alarm alerts.

Emergency power‑off safety function

When main power supply fails, built‑in fail‑safe mechanism activates. Swing panels automatically swing fully open, completely clearing passage for emergency evacuation, complying with commercial retail building fire‑safety requirements.
